KEY LEADER is Kiwanis International's new leadership education program for students, primarily in high school. Its mission is to provide a "life-changing experience that inspires young people to achieve their personal best through service leadership." Most KEY LEADER events are designed for 8th grade through 12th grade students. As the program grows events will also include Circle K members and events open to graduating 8th grade Builders Club members. The Kiwanis Club of Fallbrook proudly sponsors these service clubs.
The Key Club at Fallbrook Union High School is a coeducational service organization for high school students. Although it is organized and sponsored by our club, it is a self-governing organization and elects its own officers, determines its own service activities, and establishes its own dues structure. Its objectives mirror the Objects of Kiwanis International.
At Potter Junior High School we sponsor a coeducational service club called the Builders Club, which provides young people the opportunity to help others, serve their school and community, and build a positive future for themselves. It is ideally suited for students in the seventh and eighth grades and has four objectives:
The Kiwanis club's role is to initiate organization of sponsored clubs in accordance with guidelines provided by Kiwanis International, obtain the approval of school officials for its establishment if it is a school organization, recruit initial members, schedule the organizational meeting, file the petition for charter, plan for the charter presentation event, and, after the club is fully operating, to provide continuous coordination, counsel, assistance, and instruction.
Once organized, a sponsored service club is continuously sponsored by a Kiwanis club. Although the ultimate responsibility for the sponsored club is that of the Kiwanis Club's Board of Directors, the sponsorship function is most directly carried out by the Kiwanis club's committee on sponsored programs (Chairman, SOAP) usually assisted by a representative from the sponsoring club and assisted by a faculty advisor (who may or may not be a Kiwanian) designated by the school's administration. |
